“You’ll both fight on the front lines,” he says, walking toward the door. Then he stops, turns back to me. “Once they see you’re on our side,” he says, “they will know there’s no hope. They will surrender to me, and the Crows will finally rule the faerieground, the way we ought to.”

I don’t say anything. I have to pretend to go along with this. “I have one request, sir,” I say, bowing my head. “I would like to wear my crown. If they see me as their queen turned against them, rather than a simple girl, I think they’ll be more likely to give up. Don’t you?”

A spark flashes in the king’s eyes. “Brilliant,” he says. “I’ll have your crown returned to your room while you dress.”

I bow and follow Caro before I can say anything else.

I don’t know where this idea came from, but I think I need my crown. Of course King Georg knows its power, but he doesn’t think I know, and he thinks I’m a Crow now. He thinks I’d never do anything to fight against him. He thinks I’m stupid. He thinks I’d fight my own people. He thinks wrong.
